Mayfair Theatre

Opened in 1932, the Mayfair Theatre is an "atmospheric" theatre designed in the Spanish Revival style. In the auditorium, designer Rene de Vos created the atmosphere of a Mediterranean plaza featuring an ornate painted ceiling, faux stone facades and balconies, with wrought ironwork and ornamental glass windows. Today, the Mayfair is said to be haunted, being the oldest surviving movie theatre in Ottawa and the last of its kind.

Lee Demarbre

Programmer Lee Demarbre sat down with Key Records to talk about the Mayfair Theatre and the changes that have taken place in the movie house business. We learned the Mayfair has the distinction of never having been owned by, or affiliated with, any of the major cinema chains. Over the years the Mayfair has survived as an example of an "atmospheric cinema". Built with a particular theme in mind the Mayfair with original clock has enhanced the movie-going experience, drawing the movie-goer to another place and time.
